postcards from gran canaria: playa del cura

It’s been a week since we were at Gran Canaria, where we spent lazy days under the sun. No work, no worries, no winter. Jetting away in January is such luxury. Suddenly, winter got shorter. Skins got darker. Souls got lighter.

After seeing the other places around Gran Canaria, we were happy we made the right choice with our hotel. It’s nestled at the quiet resort of Playa del Cura, on the southwest coast of Gran Canaria, with a beach cove and a relaxed atmosphere. Our hotel, Sunprime Riviera Beach & Spa is a designer property that’s sitting right on the beach. Marketed as a child-free hotel, one’s guaranteed quiet and peace. There are a variety of sunbeds and fringed parasols around the hotel’s two pools. A few steps away and one can enjoy the revitalizing waters of the Atlantic. Our suite, located at the topmost floor and on the edge of the hotel, afforded a sweeping view of the ocean. Every afternoon as the sky turned golden to crimson, we got to admire the sun disappearing into the horizon.

Oh how I miss thee!

Welcome to Sunprime Riviera Beach & Spa!

Once you enter, you are greeted by these lovely lilies and a great smelling reception lobby!

Reaaally good mattresses, these ones. How thoughtful that our robes and towels were of differing shades of green, no mix-up!

Yes, that’s an open shower right there!  LOL.

This view greeted us every morning as we ate our breakfast on the balcony.

These fringe pool parasols were fabulous! And that’s our balcony right on the edge, where we watched the beach life unfold from down under.

The rugged terrain of Gran Canaria serves as a picturesque backdrop to the hotel pool.

Even Edward got to soak in some rays.

Weeee! Let’s get soaking wet!

Life’s a beach.

The final sunset over Playa del Cura. Oh how we will miss thee!

prada perforated saffiano leather bags

As I was browsing at Saks Fifth Avenue (which now ships to Norway, dangerrr, LOL), I saw the perforated runway duffel bag I blogged about earlier, and a briefcase that seems to be in the same Spring/Summer 2010 collection. Their one common feature: perforated Saffiano leather.

The Prada Perforated Saffiano Leather Duffel Bag ($2,095/GBP 1,358/EUR 1,520) has top leather handles, an adjustable nylon shoulder strap, an interior pocket, and is fully lined. Prada is branded on a logo plate and it also includes a leather luggage tag. For size reference: 17″ x 10¼” x 9¾”. I do love this since I first saw its backstage photos and it’s bigger than most of you probably thought. It has almost the same length and height as the Louis Vuitton Keepall 45, but is a bit wider.

Meanwhile, the Prada Perforated Saffiano Leather Briefcase ($2,100/GBP 1,361/EUR 1,524) is not much to my liking. I’m just not too sure of its shape. But for those interested, this modern rethinking of the classic briefcase has an interior zip pocket, is fully lined and the Prada branding is found on the two polished palladium clip closures. For size reference: 15¾” x 11½” x 3½”.

edward + ieoh

Inspired by a tweet from deluxeduck, I took this photo of Edward, the Prada robot keycharm hanging off Ieoh, the Louis Vuitton bag. Tough, eh?

prada spring 2010 runway duffel bag

With three back-to-back-to-back (is that even correct?) Prada purchases, I’m currently on a Prada high. And seeing this duffel bag appearing on the Prada Men’s Spring 2010 runway and backstage (first spotted at Bagaholicboy, congrats for being referenced by Prada: the Book, btw!), it’s like taking another happy pill.

The perforated leather on the bag looks oh so soft, which is suddenly punctuated by the Saffiano leather handles. The color combination on this particular piece is so spot-on too. I see that there’s also a ring for a shoulder strap so the ways of carrying the bag can be doubled in an instant. Let’s see if this bag jumps from the runway and into the stores come first quarter next year. I’m excited.

*crosses fingers.

a deviation called prada

Do you remember this?

Appearing on the Prada Men’s Spring Summer 2009 Runway together with that all-leather tote I blogged and coveted, this oversized tote had many boys a wanting. I’ve held the smaller version of this tote and the messenger bag at a store here in Oslo last summer and could not stop thinking about them since.

Then just two weeks ago right before I flew to Milan, this huge box came in the mail from Italy.

What’s inside, well I guess it’s no rocket science.

First of all, I did not expect this tote to be THIS huge! I initially thought I could use it as a day bag but it’s so roomy that it’s best as a weekender/travel tote. I’ve in fact used it on my trip to Sweden last weekend.

I absolutely love the mix of materials used on this handsome bag – the soft suede leather bottom with the embossed Prada logo, the trademark quilted nylon in a stunning navy color, and the rich leather trimmings and handles in a delicious chocolate color. The buckled strap detailing paired with brushed brass hardware give the bag a masculine seal of approval.

The roomy interior features the Prada lining, along with two large interior pockets – one that’s zippered – and top fastening. While four metal domed feet protect the base of the bag.

Since I’ve started this little bag obsession, it has always been Louis Vuitton. But this Prada tote is a welcome respite from all the monogram madness. It’s also my first Prada bag and at the look of things, would certainly not be my last.

prada the book

When the word hit the cyber-street about Prada’s latest invention – the 706-page tome that “retraces and represents the multivalent aspects” of the Italian fashion brand – I knew I had to get one. And thanks to the site dedicated to the book, online shopping is possible and with super fast delivery, I got mine yesterday. Despite a little mishap with the shipping where the cover case was damaged and the slip case torn apart (dealt with superbly by Prada Client Service who’s sending me a new copy), it doesn’t shy away from the fact that Prada the book is gorgeous. Not only does it come with a Saffiano textured slip case and book cover, it’s also filled with hundreds of beautiful photos chronicling Prada’s history, ideas development, production processes, advertising campaigns, and innovative engagement with the worlds of technology, architecture, art and cinema. And at the root of it all, the fashion that has driven Prada since its establishment in 1913 to becoming a global powerbrand.

Accessorize your coffee table collection with this handsomely structured book from Prada. Available at Prada stores and here. €100.
