saturday morning shopping

I was up unusually early today, given it’s a Saturday, but Knut had his course orientation day and I went with him to the university. On the way back on the subway, I got off at the Parliament station and headed to the Louis Vuitton store to check out the new window displays (more on that later).

Next door is the flagship store of Moods of Norway and they were having their January sale! If you remember, I’ve written about the brand in the Dec-Jan issue of Garage Magazine. Anyway, I spotted the hooded sweater I like from this season, and guess what? It’s at 50% off! Best things come to those who wait :-p

I love the colors on this hood and the details are charming – the tractor zipper pull, the rubberized Cocktail Travels chest patch, and the prints of parcel stamps across the upper back. Here’s the Herman Moods Paravion hood in City Cox Stripe.

The store’s dressing rooms are designed as outdoor toilets usually found in the (Norwegian) countryside. Instead of a hole that goes right through to the ground, a mirror is installed. To check your booty? LOL.

postcards from gran canaria: playa del cura

It’s been a week since we were at Gran Canaria, where we spent lazy days under the sun. No work, no worries, no winter. Jetting away in January is such luxury. Suddenly, winter got shorter. Skins got darker. Souls got lighter.

After seeing the other places around Gran Canaria, we were happy we made the right choice with our hotel. It’s nestled at the quiet resort of Playa del Cura, on the southwest coast of Gran Canaria, with a beach cove and a relaxed atmosphere. Our hotel, Sunprime Riviera Beach & Spa is a designer property that’s sitting right on the beach. Marketed as a child-free hotel, one’s guaranteed quiet and peace. There are a variety of sunbeds and fringed parasols around the hotel’s two pools. A few steps away and one can enjoy the revitalizing waters of the Atlantic. Our suite, located at the topmost floor and on the edge of the hotel, afforded a sweeping view of the ocean. Every afternoon as the sky turned golden to crimson, we got to admire the sun disappearing into the horizon.

Oh how I miss thee!

Welcome to Sunprime Riviera Beach & Spa!

Once you enter, you are greeted by these lovely lilies and a great smelling reception lobby!

Reaaally good mattresses, these ones. How thoughtful that our robes and towels were of differing shades of green, no mix-up!

Yes, that’s an open shower right there!  LOL.

This view greeted us every morning as we ate our breakfast on the balcony.

These fringe pool parasols were fabulous! And that’s our balcony right on the edge, where we watched the beach life unfold from down under.

The rugged terrain of Gran Canaria serves as a picturesque backdrop to the hotel pool.

Even Edward got to soak in some rays.

Weeee! Let’s get soaking wet!

Life’s a beach.

The final sunset over Playa del Cura. Oh how we will miss thee!

canarian shopping loot

While I sort through over 500 photos from Gran Canaria and pick which ones to blog, I’ll start off with some quick shopping summary of sorts. I wasn’t expecting much on the shopping front while I was on this holiday and since our side of the island didn’t have much to offer apart from the customary supermarket and a solitary souvenir shop, we took our money to the capital Las Palmas and the neighboring (not to mention picturesque) marina community of Puerto de Mogan.

In Las Palmas, the only upper echelon brand I went into was Loewe, where I left empty handed. Walking along the main shopping avenue of Calle Triana, I spotted high street brand Massimo Dutti where I picked up a pair of leather gloves with wool lining and a gingham shirt for work. These items were on sale and I paid less than 50 euros for both. Joy!

We were in Puerto de Mogan one day and feeling the summer vibrations in the air (in January, no less!), I stepped into the Lacoste store and got myself two of its classic short sleeve pique polos in delightfully vibrant colors – Goji Berry Pink and Chlorophyll. Since I’m now back in Oslo, I would have to wait until our summer days are here until I could use these. In five months time. Boo!

Shopping loots make great souvenirs, non?

a1 to melodi grand prix finals!

We’re back in Oslo! And what better way to get back into the swing of things than watch the last two semi-finals of Melodi Grand Prix – the winner of which will represent Norway in the Eurovision Song Contest in May right here in Oslo.

Norwegian-British group A1 got a golden ticket tonight to the national finals in two weeks (we’re watching it live!) with their song “Don’t Wanna Lose You Again.” I heard hints of Coldplay in this catchy mid-tempo pop tune. I actually got excited when I heard their entry and am now silently hoping for an A1 victory on February 6. That is if it doesn’t go to the night’s other qualifier – pretty boy Didrik Solli-Tangen (left) with his powerful ballad “My Heart is Yours” in the same feel as “You Raise Me Up,” that took the whole semi-final by storm.

On the fashion front, the A1 guys were all wearing different incarnations of military jackets and a waist coat. Looks like Mark Read (center) is wearing the military jacket from Zara Fall/Winter 2010. Me likey!

Here are the videos of the qualifying performances:
