first of may

It’s almost ten months since I flew from Manila to Oslo and I feel that time does fly so fast. Today is a public holiday and so after watching Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and taking a shower at 4PM, I met up with Knut and walked up to Karl Johan. I took these photos along the way, taken with my crappy phone.

No, the effects of global warming are not as obvious as this picture suggests but we saw these three Russ girls. Russ refers to students who graduate from high school and celebrate with characteristic festivities – renting big red buses with expensive sound system blaring loud music from the first of May (or even earlier) through to May 17, the national day of Norway, giving away Russ cards (with the owner’s photo, name, and some funny slogan) to children who eagerly collect them, and completing assignments listed on the Russ Knots List. A Russ Knot is a knot attached to a Russ cap after one has accomplished the task – in this picture, obviously it’s skiing along Grønland or “Greenland”. Other tasks are a tad boisterous such as chugging a huge amount of alcohol in a short period of time, putting a “For Sale” sign on a Police car, public nudity or kissing a person of the same sex. Now they should do those last two all the time! So basically, it’s boys and girls gone wild. Anyway, next!

On a certain stretch along Karl Johan, most notably that part where TGI Friday’s meets Hard Rock, you will see motorcycles and lots of Harley Davidsons parked in their imposing, expensive, and shiny armour. There’s your whiff of testosterone in the air.

After that Naked Black Man installation (c’mon, I know you’ll click the link) in front of the Oslo Central Station last fall, we saw this huge colorful artwork named Future Oslo – a German teenager’s vision of the city in ten years time. It’s funny when you notice the small details showing Norwegian trademarks. I didn’t notice until now that the facade of the Central Station looks like a Mondrian grid – well, at least with those frame shadows.

Taken from the top of the Royal Palace steps, where I soaked under some sun. Now I’ll make some Forest Berries milkshake and read Sophie Kinsella’s The Undomestic Goddess out in the balcony. Sooo gay! Happy first of May!

Camwhoring is one of the things I do best, r*yan. Hahaha! Oh you mean those red jumpers? They’re kinda cool because they are personalized by the wearer. Size? Hmmm… Now you’re talking. What’s yours? ;p
